Hanging your wallpaper is not hard when you have superior instructions to follow. Are you psyched to enhance your interior?

If you haven’t hung wallpaper before, select your type wisely by paying attention throughout the selection process. Depending on which kind you decide on, there may be some unique installation options. The pre-pasted versions combine a dry paste onto the back of the surface. This is triggered by using water, while unpasted wallpapers need a wet paste applied with installation. Generally, the process is the same for installing, however, the directions may differ according to which type.

These four simple steps will help you with any wallpaper application: Measure, Cut, Activate with water or paste and lastly, hang.

Wall Preparation

Your surface area and work area needs to be tidy and clear ahead of wallpaper installation. Make sure all electrical outlets are switched off and take off any wall fixtures. Use TSP or some wall cleaner to clean the wall work surface and prepare it by ensuring any past wallpaper or paste is taken off.

Rely on a premixed universal primer specific for wallpaper to ensure your surface is prepared. Priming the wall is a crucial step when you are installing unpasted wallpaper given it allows easier removal of the wallpaper later.

Measure & Activate the Paper

The size of the wall is your initial measurement. Next, add four inches and then cut your wallpaper. Ideally, you want the paper overlapping at the baseboard and the ceiling by roughly two inches.

Pro Tip: Allow for pattern match, via drop match, straight across or random.

If hanging unpasted wallpaper…

For unpasted wallpaper, many prefer to put the paste onto the wall, while other people apply it directly to the wallpaper. If you want to paste the wall, apply it evenly and cover a section for one wallpaper strip at a time. If you decide to paste the paper, operate from the centre to the edges and uniformly coat the rear of the wallpaper. Then loosely fold the moistened strip, pasted sides together with each other and let sit for three minutes. This is known as booking.

Experiment to see if you prefer pasting unpasted versions by applying the paste to the paper or the wall. Be sure to only paste one area of the wall at a time should you be pasting the wall. When you are applying paste to the wall, just paste one portion at a time. If you are implementing the paste to the paper, put an even layer of paste on the wallpaper backing. Start in the middle of the wallpaper and work to the external edges. Booking the wallpaper is really a necessary step that is accomplished by loosely folding the moistened strip of wallpaper and placing the pasted portions together. Allow the booking aka folded wallpaper to sit in this manner for 3 minutes.

Pro Tip: If displaying heavyweight wallpapers, particularly unpasted versions with flock, cork, or embroidery, pick a clear, stain-free heavyweight pre-mixed paste adhesive rather than a light-medium weight clear paste for the best results.

When hanging pre-pasted wallpaper…

Hold the patterned side in and the pasted side facing out whenever you cut your strip and roll it. Energize the paste by submerging the rolled piece for 30 seconds into tepid water. You may also rely on a wallpaper hand sprayer that emits a fine water mist to stimulate the pasted portion.

We love this strategy and advocate spraying in long strokes the duration of the paper thoroughly moisten the back of the strip. Concentrate on the edges for even application. Have the pasted edges together by folding each portion of the strip toward the middle. Carefully align the sides so they don’t dry up. Delicately roll the strip similar to a rolled newspaper and enable it to rest for three minutes. This booking action allows the paste to become totally activated and the wallpaper backing to relax and become more flexible.

Hanging your first strip

As soon as the booking is finished, take your strip to the wall. Delicately unfold the item and hang it. The paper can hang over the baseboard and the ceiling. Remove any air bubbles using a smoothing brush or wide knife or a plastic smoother. Press the wallpaper to guarantee adequate wall contact. Take care not to stretch or distort the wallpaper. Delicately press on the seam to compress them with a seam roller.

Proceeding to the second strip

Whenever butting the 2nd piece up to the first strip, position the second wallpaper portion to the edge of the first. Easily push the wallpaper securely. Eliminate any left over paste by cleansing the ceiling as well as the baseboard after. You would like your seams to produce a tight fit vertically. Ensure there aren't any air bubbles in the paste.

Once you've placed three panels smoothly to the wall and extracted excess paste, set aside a second to examine your work. Check the sections for color and pattern uniformity. Proceed in the same way, three panels each time around your space. Give yourself more installation and selvage trimming time when you are dealing with complex patterns and geometrical designs. Take pauses when you want to rest your arms and your eyes. Don’t rush your wallpaper task. Displaying your strips in this manner can help you achieve uniform results. Lastly, cautiously cut the excess trim along the ceiling and baseboards. Use a razor knife plus a guide to slowly take away the excess without tearing.
